WHAT ARE THE HOURS AND PHONE NUMBER FOR ANIMAL CONTROL?

Animal Control operates out of the Richmond County Health Department, Environmental Health Division. Hours of operation are:

WHAT DO I DO IN CASE OF AN ANIMAL CONTROL EMERGENCY AFTER HOURS?

After hours and on weekends, please call the Richmond County Sherriff’s Department at 910-895-3232.

HOW DO I LODGE A COMPLAINT?

Call Animal Control at 910-997-8288 Monday through Friday between 8am and 5pm and leave a message. Leave your name, phone number, address and a brief message explaining the matter. An animal control officer will investigate your concerns and return your call promptly.

WHAT ARE THE LEASH LAWS FOR RICHMOND COUNTY?

Local police departments enforce leash laws, not animal control. Leash laws exist inside the city limits of Rockingham and Hamlet. There are no leash laws within the county.

WHAT DO I DO ABOUT WILDLIFE (Raccoons, Possums, Birds, Bats, etc)?

Animal Control does not handle Wildlife concerns. Please direct these concerns to a licensed trapper. If a wild animal is inside of an occupied dwelling, Animal Control may be called on an emergency basis.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY ANIMAL BITES SOMEONE/I AM BITTEN BY AN ANIMAL?

Seek medical attention. NC State law requires that all animal bites are reported to the Health Director.

DO I HAVE TO HAVE MY ANIMAL VACCINATED?

Yes. All dogs, cats and ferrets over 4 months old must be vaccinated by a certified vaccinator against rabies. Fines may be imposed for unvaccinated animals.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE HUMANE SOCIETY AND ANIMAL CONTROL?

The Humane Society of Richmond County is a contracted agency that shelters the animals picked up by Animal Control. The Humane Society of Richmond County may be reached at 910-895-0335.

WHAT DO I DO WITH UNWANTED ANIMALS?

Call Animal Control to pick up stray or unwanted animals. There is no charge for this service.

WHAT IS CONSIDERED A NUISANCE DOG?

Any dog that destroys property, barks incessantly, chases pedestrians, cars or bicyclists is considered a nuisance. Animal Control may issue citations for such animals.

WHAT CONSITITUES NEGLECT OF AN ANIMAL?

All animals must have access to fresh water, food and shelter. Animals must be in good health and be tethered reasonably. Animal Control may issue citations for animals which are deemed neglected.

WHAT DO I DO ABOUT A DEAD ANIMAL?

It is the duty of the pet owner or owner of the property where the animal has expired to bury the dead animal. If an animal has been hit by a vehicle and died on a primary or secondary road, contact the NC Department of Transportation.
