Envirothon
What is Envirothon?
Envirothon is a natural science academic competition for middle and high school students. Teams consist of 3-5 students who will study throughout the school year in preparation for the competitions.
Richmond SWCD can help assist in preparing teams for this event.
Competitions
Teams will compete in the Area VII competition on March 20th, 2025. Area VII is made up of the following counties: Bladen, Columbus, Cumberland, Harnett, Hoke, Richmond, Robeson, Sampson, and Scotland.
Both middle and high school teams attend this competition but compete separately. Each team takes a written test at each station, and the team with the highest total score wins the competition. The winner will move on to the State Envirothon.
The test questions are centered around five subject areas:
- Soils - classifications, erosion, soil surveys, characteristics, best management practices
- Wildlife - habitats, identifications, food, harvesting, rules, diseases, management
- Aquatics - ecology, stream improvement, water quality, pollution, wetlands, conservation, macroinvertebrates
- Forestry - tree identification, improvement of timber stands, insects, forest management, ecology
- Current Environmental Issues - any current or newsworthy environmental issues
Information about the Area VII competition can be found here.
